Rekindling the beauty of Curly Hair

Rekindling the beauty of Curly Hair

Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh, dear sisters,

Curly hair is a beautiful expression of Allah’s creation, but it comes with unique challenges that require love and attention. Many of us with curls may struggle with dryness, frizz, or losing curl definition due to braiding or styling under the hijab. Today, I’m sharing a routine to nourish and protect your curls, while staying aligned with our Islamic values.

This routine includes specially chosen products to bring out the best in your curls, while also providing a DIY alternative for sisters on a budget. Let’s work together to embrace the beauty of our curls, InshaAllah.

Step 1: Cleanse with Coconut Shampoo & conditioner

I chose Coconut Shampoo as the foundation of this routine because coconut is one of the best ingredients for curly hair. Its natural properties deeply nourish curls and help to retain moisture.

Why Coconut is Good for Curls:

Deep Hydration: Coconut oil penetrates the hair shaft to provide moisture from within, essential for curls prone to dryness.

Reduces Frizz: It smooths the hair cuticle, taming frizz and enhancing definition.

Strengthens Hair: Its vitamins and fatty acids repair damage and prevent breakage, keeping curls resilient.

How to Use Coconut Shampoo?

1. Wet your hair thoroughly with lukewarm water.

2. Apply the shampoo, focusing on your scalp, and gently massage in circular motions to stimulate blood flow.

3. Rinse thoroughly, letting the shampoo cleanse the rest of your hair as it flows down.

This step cleanses your scalp and hair while preserving the natural oils curly hair needs.

Step 2: Define and Restore with Hydrating Cream

Curly hair often loses its shape when it’s braided or styled under the hijab. A hydrating cream restores moisture and encourages curls to reclaim their natural definition.

Why Hydrating Cream is Important:

Locks in Moisture: Keeps your curls hydrated throughout the day, preventing dryness.

Restores Curl Pattern: Helps curls bounce back after being braided or tied.

Reduces Breakage: Adds a protective layer that keeps hair strong and soft.

How to Use Hydrating Cream?

1. After shampooing, gently towel-dry your hair to remove excess water.

2. Apply a small amount of hydrating cream to your curls, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends.

3. Scrunch your hair gently with your hands to enhance the curl pattern.

4. Let your hair air-dry or use a diffuser for faster drying.

Step 3: Deeply Nourish with Alfaparf Milano Hair Mask

I selected the Alfaparf Milano Hair Mask because of its inclusive approach to all curl types and its commitment to the environment. Inspired by the diverse Mediterranean curls I saw in Italy, I trust this brand to cater to a variety of textures while offering sustainability.

Why This Hair Mask is Ideal for Curls?

Repairs Damage: Nourishes and restores elasticity to curls that have been stretched or styled.

Strengthens Hair: Helps prevent breakage, ensuring healthy and resilient curls.

Adds Shine: Leaves curls looking radiant and full of life.

How to Use the Hair Mask:

1. Apply generously to damp, freshly washed hair, focusing on the lengths and ends.

2. Leave it on for 10–15 minutes to allow the nutrients to penetrate deeply.

3. Rinse with cool water to seal the cuticle and lock in moisture.

4. Use once a week for the best results.

DIY Routine for Sisters on a Budget

If premium products are out of reach, here’s a simple DIY alternative that works just as well to care for your curls:

DIY Coconut Shampoo

Mix 1 cup of water with 1 tablespoon of coconut oil and 1 tablespoon of castile soap. Shake well before each use.

DIY Hydrating Cream

Blend 2 tablespoons of aloe vera gel with 1 teaspoon of coconut milk and a few drops of argan oil. Apply to damp hair to hydrate and define curls.

DIY Deep Conditioning Mask

Combine 1 ripe avocado, 2 tablespoons of honey, and 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Apply generously to your curls, leave for 20 minutes, and rinse thoroughly.

These natural remedies provide nourishment and hydration without breaking the bank.

Why This Routine Matters?

In Islam, caring for ourselves is a form of worship. Allah has entrusted us with our bodies, and it’s our duty to protect and maintain what He has given us. Curls are a unique feature that require attention to thrive, and this routine helps preserve their beauty while showing gratitude to Allah.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (peace be upon him) said:

“Whoever has hair, let him care for it properly.”

Taking care of curly hair is not just about physical maintenance it’s about honoring Allah’s creation. By using natural, nourishing methods and following the Sunnah of braiding or tying our hair modestly, we can protect our curls while staying true to our values.

Curly hair is a blessing that reflects the diversity in Allah’s creation. With the right routine, whether using premium products or homemade alternatives, you can protect and embrace your curls while following Islamic principles. Let’s honor the beauty Allah has given us and care for it with love and gratitude.

With love and duas,

Your sister in faith
